My besties birthday was in October and like always I wanted to make her something super special. I decided to make my little yogi friend a Mala. Malas are Buddhist prayer beads used to count the number of times a mantra is recited while meditating. Also said to be the Buddhist rosary.
I love these because the ways in which these can be designed are endless. Buddhist malas are made up of 108 beads, symbolizing 108 afflictions, and Tibetan malas have counter beads at 27 bead intervals to aid the counting process, therefore each mala is divided with decorative elements at every 27th bead.
I love love love how this came out! I used all sorts of beads; metal, wood, glass, and rock. For the wooden beads I stained them in a simple tea bath for three days to give them a bit of an earthly tint so they weren’t just stark wood. I used cotton thread for the necklace and embroidery thread for the tassel.
I went at this with an open mind and it came out beautiful.
